Wiltshire resident surrenders prohibited weapons under updated law
Amesbury Policing Team collects shuriken as part of offensive weapons crackdown
Officers from the Amesbury Neighbourhood Policing Team recently collected two prohibited shurikens after a local resident voluntarily surrendered them, following updates to the Offensive Weapons Act 2019.
The items have been secured and marked for destruction, aligning with efforts to ensure community safety under the revised regulations.
The Offensive Weapons Act was updated in 2025 to make it illegal to possess certain weapons even within one’s home.
Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, butterfly knives, disguised knives, flick knives, zombie-style knives, sword sticks, push daggers, blowpipes, telescopic truncheons, batons, knuckle dusters, and throwing stars.
Possession of these weapons carries potential penalties of up to 51 weeks’ imprisonment.
Awareness of the law change remains limited, with the advice being to surrender any such items to Wiltshire Police.
The Amesbury Neighbourhood Policing Team encourages individuals to visit their nearest police station to hand in prohibited weapons securely.
Secure wrapping is advised to prevent injury, and guidance is available to ensure safe processes.
Acknowledging the responsible actions of the community, police thanked the member of the public for their proactive involvement in maintaining safety.
The initiative reinforces the importance of community cooperation in upholding the law and preventing potential harm.
