Residents of the Abbey Farm estate in Swindon's St Andrews East ward are increasingly frustrated due to overflowing bins filled with rubbish, including dog waste and human sanitary items.

Councillor Kate Tomlinson, recently elected to represent the area, warns that the situation could become a public health nuisance.

Cllr Tomlinson voiced concerns about the management company, Gateway, which is responsible for bin maintenance.

She said, “Gateway the management company for the estate, has failed to empty both the main bins and the dog waste bins for weeks."

In light of the persistent issues, some residents, along with Swindon Borough Council, have taken steps to mitigate the overflowing waste by clearing some of the refuse themselves.

Councillor Tomlinson praised the council's support, as they intervened to address emergency concerns regarding waste accumulation around the children's play area and paths leading to the school.

Gateway acknowledged the issue, attributing the problem to delays in their contractor's bin collection services.

A spokesman for Gateway stated, “We immediately raised the matter with the relevant contractor and sought assurances that the bins would be emptied as a priority.”

Gateway commits to reviewing collection arrangements and considering increased collection frequencies in consultation with residents, aiming for a long-term solution.

Cllr Tomlinson and fellow Councillor Jake Chandler continue pushing Vistry Homes, the estate developer, to expedite the handover of the management company to the residents as initially promised.

The ongoing dialogue reflects efforts to ensure standards of cleanliness and resolve service gaps impacting community well-being.
