Incorrect plumbing leads to sewage contamination at Worthing beach

Southern Water say high E. coli levels have been traced back to a block of flats

Water testing at Worthing Beach House, a stretch of coastline opposite Splashpoint Leisure Centre, has revealed significant levels of E. coli contamination due to a sewer misconnection.

The coastal site, newly designated as a bathing water site in May 2024, has been testing poorly for water quality.

Recent findings by the Environment Agency and Southern Water indicated high E. coli levels, traced back to a block of flats that discharged foul sewage into surface water drains.

These drains, meant for rainwater, had been contaminated by waste from toilets, sinks, washing machines, and other sources.

These plumbing errors can occur at any building and negatively impact the environment.

Immediate plumbing work rectified the issue, stopping the sewage from entering Worthing Beach House waters.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to have their wastewater systems inspected to avoid such issues.
