Major repair work to begin on Worthing Pier
Permanent repairs to secure the pier's future
Work is set to begin in August on a major project intended to secure the future of Worthing Pier.
The pier, closed in October 2024 due to storm damage to its supporting structures, has relied on temporary steel reinforcements for stability.
After 18 months of collaboration with specialist engineering teams, a permanent solution has been developed.
This plan includes installing new piles beneath the pier to offer support, allowing the removal of the temporary steel structure once the repair work is complete.
Councillor Caroline Baxter, leader of Worthing Borough Council, said, “When we installed the temporary steel support beneath the pier in December 2024, we said it would give us the time needed to develop a permanent solution. I'm delighted that we're now able to take that next step and deliver permanent repairs.
"This is about taking pride in Worthing, protecting what makes our town special and making sure our iconic pier can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
The forecasted cost for the project stands at £550,000, a significant reduction from the initial estimate of £930,000.
The pier's landing stage, used primarily by local fishermen, has reopened following maintenance work, with degraded handrails replaced to ensure safety for public use.
Repairs will align with spring low tides, which offer extended periods of low tide and better weather, providing safer conditions for the team.
Routine maintenance will continue alongside major repairs to ensure the safety and longevity of the pier.
