Man jailed for fatally 'slapping' Worthing pensioner

A man has been jailed for two years and four months after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of an 80-year-old in Worthing.
Arno Engels, 40, who has no fixed address, appeared at Hove Crown Court today (30th April).
Originally charged with murder, Engels admitted to manslaughter following the death of Anthony Scarrott, known as Tony, on January 30th.
Incident Details
Detectives launched a murder investigation after Tony was found with serious injuries at a residence on Westcourt Road, Worthing, on 11th September 2025.
He was taken to hospital but died there on 14th September.
It was determined that Engels, who knew Tony, had slapped him across the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head.
Initially, Engels was arrested on suspicion of assault and released on bail.
Following further enquiries, he was re-arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently charged.

Tributes to Tony
Friends recently paid tribute to Tony ahead of his funeral.
They remembered him as "an amazing man, full of fun with an engaging personality that is sorely missed."
Tony's funeral took place on 28th January 2026 at 2:00 PM at North Chapel, Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton.
