Katie George-Dunlevy from Crawley is urging for disabled children to be supported in taking part in PE lessons

A four times world champion paracyclist from Crawley says she was left out of PE classes - before going on to win gold years later.

Katie-George Dunlevy, who has a visual impairment, won two gold medals for Team GB while at university, later securing the same accolade as a tandem cyclist for Ireland.

Last week, she maintained her world leading title in a prestigious Alabama road race for the fourth year in a row.

But she tells Greatest Hits Radio that, as a child, the types of games played in school meant she was often left on the sidelines:

"I was kind of running into the other children there and I was missing the ball.

"I actually was sat out of PE classes, which I found really hard because I loved being active and running around and everything."

Data from charity Whizz Kids recently found just 20% of wheelchair using young people find PE lessons accessible.

For Katie, moving out of a mainstream school meant she was "encouraged into sport and given opportunities".

She's now calling for that level of support to reach all children.

"A lot of the children now are in mainstreams, there's not the special schools that there used to be.

"I think they have to cater for the children with disabilities so they have the opportunity to do sport and to be active, because I just think it's so important in any child's life.

"Whether you carry on and take it to a high level or whether you just do it as a hobby, being physically active is just so important for your health and your wellbeing.

"The opportunity should be given to everyone, whether you have a disability or not."

She added that she competes for her family - but also to inspire disabled children:

"Even though through adversity and obstacles in your way, you can achieve anything and you just have to believe and believe in yourself and just aim high.

"And that's nothing, there's nothing there that can stop you."

She's now preparing to compete in the track world championships at the end of October.
