Sussex Police officer, Christian Field, finds himself facing charges after allegedly assaulting a colleague during a training exercise.

PC Field, who’s 50 and works in the Brighton and Hove Division, is charged with assault by beating, which certainly raises eyebrows about what went down during that session.

Investigation outcome and court appearance

Back in December 2025, Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department started investigating the incident.

Clearly, it was enough to prompt action, leading to the Crown Prosecution Service diving in and giving PC Field a charge for common assault.

With restricted duties already in place, PC Field is now staring down an appearance at Reading Magistrates Court on 10th June.

Context and repercussions

You might wonder what this means for training exercises going forward. After all, they’re supposed to be about honing skills and teamwork, not ending up in courtrooms.

Such situations, while rare, can definitely shake public trust and put the spotlight on the importance of conduct and transparency among officers.

This charge might end up prompting changes in police training protocols and what’s expected of officers.

As Sussex Police navigates this, there’s a conversation being had about professionalism and accountability, and it’s one worth having.
