Police in Sussex say they're expecting a spike in calls over the Halloween weekend.

With the day falling on a Saturday, drunkenness, anti-social behaviour and unwanted trick or treaters are expected to be the main reasons for people picking up the phone.

Patrols are being upped throughout the nighttime economy to provide extra support.

"Excess alcohol use puts people into a vulnerable position and you can then become a victim of crime from it," explained Chief Inspector Dan Eagle.

"It's about enjoying the night, but trying to avoid going into that excess.

"Go out with friends and make sure that you're looking out for each other.

"It's really important not to leave drinks unattended.

It's something licensed venues are really, really proactive in trying to prevent, but people just need to be aware of that as well." He also encouraged people to be "mindful and respectful" of those who may not want to celebrate, including elderly and vulnerable people.

"Only go to houses that are clearly celebrating Halloween," he advised.

"Ones that have got pumpkins and decorations out are usually a good place to go if someone wants to knock on the door and do trick or treating."
