Sussex Police have shared advice to help people across the county protect their homes against burglaries during the Christmas season.

While burglary prevention is important year-round, officers say taking extra steps during the festive period could help deter potential thieves and keep homes safe.

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Hutchings said: “During this time of year homes can be more at risk of burglary.

“We encourage the public to be extra security conscious during their preparations for the Christmas period.”

Using a festive theme inspired by the film 'Home Alone,' Sussex Police have issued several tips for homeowners:

  • Ensure all windows and doors are securely locked
  • Keep Christmas presents out of sight to avoid tempting burglars
  • Dispose of empty packaging carefully – boxes or packaging left outside can indicate what valuables you have inside
  • Avoid storing valuables like gifts in cars, sheds, or garages
  • Avoid posting details online about being away from home
  • Make your home look occupied, using timer switches on lights or radios, or asking a trusted neighbour to help by drawing curtains
  • Test burglar alarms to ensure they work properly
  • Register valuable items on secure websites like Immobilise
  • Join your local Neighbourhood Watch for community support

Detective Chief Inspector Hutchings added: “We understand the traumatic impact burglary has on victims emotionally as well as the financial loss.

“Sussex Police carries out a significant amount of engagement work with communities to prevent crime and bring perpetrators to justice.

“We are committed to attending every residential burglary in-person, to afford us the best possible opportunity to gather evidence and reach a successful outcome for victims.”
