The South East Coast Ambulance Service is bracing for increased demand as temperatures in the south east are expected to exceed 30C this week.

With the heatwave and England's World Cup match against Ghana tonight, officials are urging the public to take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

During May's heatwave, 999 calls surged by 30 percent, and similar figures are anticipated.

Authorities stress the importance of timely calls in emergencies and suggest alternative services for non-emergencies to alleviate pressure on the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

Football fans are encouraged to stay hydrated, plan their travel home, and act promptly if emergencies arise.

NHS 111 and community pharmacists are viable options for non-emergent issues, offering advice and treatments without the need for appointments.

Advice for staying safe during hot weather

To manage the extreme temperatures, people are advised to remain indoors or in shaded areas during peak sun hours (11am to 3pm), hydrate regularly, and wear sunscreen along with light clothing and hats.

Keep homes cool by avoiding direct sunlight and ventilate during cooler periods.

Look out for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children, ensuring they stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure.

Refrain from heavy physical activities during peak heat, follow water safety recommendations, and be cautious with alcohol consumption.

Preserve food safety by correctly storing and preparing meals, particularly during outdoor gatherings.

Heat stroke presents grave risks and requires urgent medical intervention via 999 calls.

While awaiting medical assistance, individuals should be moved to cooler environments, receive adequate ventilation, and be cooled using damp cloths or water.

If they are awake, it's beneficial to provide fluids, but avoid aspirin and paracetamol.
