Puffin found on Brighton beach after Storm Goretti
Seabird is under care and being monitored for recovery
A puffin has unexpectedly been discovered on Brighton beach, believed to have been a victim of Storm Goretti. Puffins are rarely seen at this time of year, as they usually spend the winter far out at sea.
The seabird was found weak and exhausted but had no visible injuries. It has been placed in an incubator for rest and has already been given fluids to aid recovery.
Staff caring for the puffin have said they are hopeful it will pull through, and arrangements have been made for the bird to be transferred to RSPCA Mallydams Wood Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre for further rehabilitation if needed.
Puffins are not typically found near beaches or coastal areas during winter months, with their habitat being out in the oceans. The presence of the bird on Brighton beach appears to be due to the impact of Storm Goretti.
