Pulborough: Progress finally made on re-opening road shut by landslip

A court hearing's dismissed an landowner appeal blocking vital works from progressing

Progress is finally being made on re-opening a West Sussex road left partially closed for over three years by a landslip.

The A29 through Pulborough first shut in December 2022, with temporary traffic lights put in place the following April.

In February 2024, landowners appealed a notice from West Sussex County Council to cut a number of unsafe trees feared to fall on drivers.

A magistrates court hearing last week saw the appeal dropped - meaning those trees can now be chopped.

Works to be completed "in a timely manner"

A West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “ In February 2024, West Sussex County Council served statutory notices on the landowners requiring them to undertake certain tree works on their property.

"These works required them to remove a number of trees which were assessed to be dead, dying or insecurely rooted so as to remove the risk of danger posed to passing vehicles or pedestrians.

"These statutory notices were appealed and referred to the magistrates’ court system, however at the recent hearing, held on the 7 and 8 January 2026, the appeals were dismissed.

"The county council will engage with the landowners to secure completion of relevant tree works in a timely manner.”

The update comes weeks after the council admitted it had "not made as much progress as it was hoping to] in 2025.
