A group behind a Jewish memorial in Hove say vandals have hit a new low, after poo was dropped on the display - before it was trashed again just days later.

The Palmeira Square photo and flower display, commemorating victims of the October 7th attacks, has been vandalised more than 40 times in just over a year.

This time, images from a vigil on Sunday show faeces on the photobook of the dead, before a further attack yesterday, saw it knocked to the ground, alongside an accompanying information board.

The Palmeira Memorial Group, who are behind the display, said the faeces was left near the photo of a hostage who's remains were returned from Gaza:

"This is a new low.

"On the very day a grieving local family finally received news of their loved one, someone carried out an act of vulgar and hateful desecration.

"It is utterly despicable.

"We urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward.

"Hate crimes like this cannot go unanswered."

Sussex Police said:

"Sussex Police received a report of criminal damage caused to a Jewish memorial in Palmeira Square, Hove, on Sunday 22 June.

"The incident is being investigated and is being treated as a hate crime.

"We aware that the ongoing conflict in Israel and in Gaza is generating public concern and is impacting communities globally and locally.

"We recognise there is the potential for increased tensions and are engaging with communities and partners to ensure people feel safe and protected.

"Anyone who experiences threatening behaviour or is worried about their safety is urged to contact Sussex Police." They added that anyone with information about the incident can report it to Sussex Police online or on 101, quoting serial 1561 of 22/06.
