Plans for roundabout at Oystercatcher pub

A consultation runs until September 14

Plans have been submitted for a new four-arm roundabout at the Oystercatcher junction in Climping.

If approved, the roundabout would connect the A259 with Yapton Road and Climping Street, including a new dedicated bus lane for eastbound buses coming from the B2233 and shared foot and cycleways.

Also proposed is a 40mph speed limit on approaches to the roundabout from the A259.

The application says it would form part of a wider A259 ‘corridor improvement scheme’ which it is claimed will improve safety and congestion between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Between 2017 and 2024 there have been a total of nine collisions at the Oystercatcher junction, according to a planning statement.

It read: “The current junction on the A259 at Oystercatcher is no longer suitable. The staggered nature of the junction negatively affects the safety, capacity, reliability, resilience and attractiveness of the existing highway.”

The results of a public consultation saw ‘overwhelming support’, with 81 per cent in favour of the proposal. However, one objection was submitted, with a resident raising concerns over issues of noise and the proposed location of the roundabout.

The site lies next to an approved 300-home development at Climping, which the new roundabout would ‘assist’.

The county council previously approved plans to build a roundabout at Comet Corner, just over a mile away. However, the start and completion dates are yet to be confirmed.

Construction of scheme at the Oystercatcher junction is projected to take about 18 months, with work proposed to take place between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday. Documents submitted with the application warn of potential noise, vibration and traffic delays during these work hours.

West Sussex County Council is due to make a decision on the application by November 5 with comments open until September 14.
