Sussex mosque set alight in arson attack hosts open day to reunite community
Accelerant was sprayed on the door and car was set alight Peacehaven Mosque on the 4th of October
A Sussex mosque which was the target of an arson attack last month is opening its doors today as a gesture of "solidarity, healing, and unity".
Accelerant was sprayed on the door and car was set alight Peacehaven Mosque on the 4th of October - with a court hearing this week that two people inside fled through the fire to escape.
38-year-old Ricky Ryder, from Seaford, and 34-year-old Jack Slowey, from Peacehaven, appeared in front of the judge this week charged with arson with intent to endanger life and two further charges of arson relating to the vehicles.
Now, Mosque leaders are hoping to unite people "from all faiths and backgrounds" by holding an Open Day from 3pm today (Saturday 15th November).
It'll include guided tours, interactive exhibitions, chances to meet Imams, and time for visitors to hear about the mosque's history and it's importance locally.
"Let's build bridges through respect, kindness, and hope"
Saqib Miah from Peacehaven Mosque said:
"Creating positivity and unity is at the heart of Islam. Negativity will always remain weak, and we must never allow hate or fear to divide us.
"We warmly invite everyone to our Open Day - a day of friendship, understanding, and community. Come as our guests, learn more about our faith and values, and share in an atmosphere of peace and togetherness.
"All are welcome. Let's build bridges through respect, kindness, and hope."
""We reject hate and intolerance" - Council leader
Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, said:
"This Open Day is not just about rebuilding bricks and mortar, it's a celebration of unity and solidarity across communities, showing that we all stand as one in support of Peacehaven Mosque and all those who worship there.
"We reject hate and intolerance, and welcome everyone to join us."
The strength of feeling is also evident in an online card set up by Lewes District Council for messages of support.
General Sanders of the 4th Battalion, British Army, wrote: "Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We fight for freedom, but we also fight for peace.
The Muslim community is welcome in this country, as is everyone else. No matter what colour or religion, we stand together."
