Police made one arrest at a lawful protest and counter-protest in Burgess Hill yesterday evening (Tuesday 15th of September).

Around 150 people attended the protest on Keymer Road.

Officers arrested a 58-year-old man from Brighton for failing to remove the scarf covering his face. He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Sussex police said before the protest that new policing powers would be in place to 'restrict the use of face coverings and ensure individuals cannot conceal their identity while participating in a lawful protest'. These powers are available to them under the Crime and Policing Act 2026.
