National Highways is investigating after roadworks caused severe congestion in Polegate.

Electrical works and temporary traffic lights saw motorists delayed.

It's hoped to look into how changes could be made to the system to make sure cars don't end up backed again.

Lewes MP James MacClearly has called the delays "unaccpetable":

"My office has been in contact with National Highways, and I welcome their decision to send additional resources to assess whether changes can be made to the current traffic management arrangements, including the frequency of traffic light changes, to help improve traffic flow.

"We are also seeking urgent clarification on the nature of the works being carried out, how long they are expected to continue, and what further steps can be taken to minimise disruption.

"I will continue to press the relevant organisations for answers and updates on behalf of local residents."

A National Highways spokesperson said: “Safety is our top priority, and we are working as hard as possible to repair the lights which were damaged in a collision last week.

"The temporary traffic lights were installed to maintain safety for pedestrians, and we will carry out the full repairs as soon as possible.”
