A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after one man died and another was seriously injured at a Brighton address.

Emergency services responded to reports of a fight taking place inside a property in Regency Square at about 2.10am on Sunday, Sussex Police said.

Two men were found with stab injuries.

One man, in his 30s, was taken to hospital in a serious condition. The second man, aged 37, was pronounced dead at the scene a short while later, the force added.

His next of kin have been informed.

A 26-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested at a nearby location on suspicion of murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of a class A drug with intent to supply, police said.

He remained in custody on Sunday afternoon.

As the investigation continues, the force said there will be an increased police presence in and around Regency Square – which is on the seafront with buildings that date back to the early 19th century, some of which are listed.

Brighton Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: “This incident has had devastating consequences, resulting in the loss of one man’s life and leaving another with serious injuries.

“There is not believed to be a wider risk to the public, and a thorough investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances.

“As this continues, there will be an increased police presence in and around Regency Square.

“We are committed to robustly tackling knife crime and will take swift and decisive action against those involved in violent offending in Brighton.”

Witnesses, or those who may have relevant footage or information, are urged to come forward and make a report. You can do this online, or by calling 101, quoting Operation Wenthill.
