A 45-year-old man has been found guilty of raping a 34-year-old woman in Dorset Gardens, Brighton.

At Brighton Crown Court, Alieu George, of no fixed address, was also convicted of sexual assault by penetration on 17th December. He had denied the charges.

During the trial, the court heard how several witnesses saw George and the woman in distress in the park area at around 9.05am on 22nd June.

People observed them on the ground with George lying on top of her before calling the police.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the woman distraught and George lying nearby. He claimed the victim, who was 34 years old, was his girlfriend.

The victim told police that George had approached her after she went for drinks with colleagues. He allegedly made excuses to separate her from her group before repeatedly attempting to sexually assault her, eventually leading her to Dorset Gardens and raping her.

George was arrested at the scene on suspicion of rape and later charged that same day.

Detective Constable Daisy Alden, who led the case, praised the victim and witnesses for their efforts.

“I would like to pay tribute to the victim in this investigation for her courage and determination,” Alden said.

“I would also like to thank the three members of public for their civic duty for calling 999 that resulted in us arriving and arresting the suspect within minutes. They gave evidence at court and their testimonies were highly impactful.”

George will remain in custody until his sentencing at Brighton Crown Court on 10th March 2026.
