Man arrested for terrorism offence in Eastbourne
Suspect detained over social media posts allegedly supporting Islamic State
A man has been arrested in connection with a terrorism offence in Eastbourne.
Counter Terrorism Police say a 35 year old man from the town was detained on suspicion of supporting the proscribed organisation Daesh, also known as IS or Islamic State, contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000.
The investigation relates to content allegedly posted by the man on social media platforms.
Police are currently conducting a search of a property in Eastbourne as part of the ongoing operation.
Chief Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw of Sussex Police addressed the concerns of the local community.
"I appreciate arrests of this nature can cause people in the local community to feel unsettled," Burtenshaw said.
"However Sussex Police has been working closely to support our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing South East as part of this pre-planned operation."
"There is not believed to be any immediate risk to those in the community but I would urge anyone who has any concerns to contact police."
The suspect is currently being held in police custody as investigations continue.
