Anyone caught dropping litter or not picking up their dog poo in Chichester will be fined on the spot, starting today (12th October).

Litter Enforcement Officers are beginning to patrol the city after resident concerns.

They're able to hand out £150 fines to litterbugs - and £100 to anyone caught leaving their dog poo about.

Those who don't pay up could be taken to court and receive maximum penalties worth thousands of pounds.

“We know that residents are very concerned about litter, fly tipping and dog fouling as they can have a negative impact on our beautiful district and spoil how people enjoy their local area,” said Councillor Jonathan Brown, Cabinet Member for Environmental Strategy at Chichester District Council.

“We take people’s concerns extremely seriously and we have been working hard to ensure that this new contract responds robustly to the needs of communities across the district."

At the moment, the council spends around £1 million per year cleaning up litter.

Brown continued: “Our new enforcement contract will put dedicated environmental enforcement officers in the district 364 days each year.

"Crucially, it now also includes investigating fly tipping, and as a council we want to work closely with our communities to help reduce instances of this appalling environmental crime."
