The King is set to experience the military air power of the 7th Air Defence Group Royal Artillery first-hand during his visit to a Hampshire barracks this Thursday.

As Captain General of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Charles's role grants him oversight of the Gunners, known for providing the British Army with its essential "eyes, ears and firepower."

Arriving by helicopter shortly after 1pm, he was dressed in a suit, regimental tie and pin.

A 21-gun salute from the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery marked his arrival, with seven rounds fired in succession.

Families, nursery, and school children at the barracks gathered to witness the military spectacle.

The King will observe the group's short and medium range air defence capabilities at Baker Barracks on Thorney Island, and meet service personnel involved in its operations.

Additionally, he will engage with the barracks' community, officially opening the new Junior Ranks’ Restaurant.

There will be interactions with families of deployed troops, including conversations with overseas personnel via a live link.

The Gunners was founded in 1716, earning the Battle Honour Ubique as the regiment has participated in every conflict involving the British Army.

The King's ceremonial leadership of the Royal Artillery began on 11th August 2023, following the legacy of King George VI in 1947 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.

The Royal Artillery comprises 14 regular regiments and seven reserve regiments.
