Hampden Park station footbridge removal affects journeys until mid-April
Passengers advised to allow extra time or use Eastbourne station
Passengers using Hampden Park railway station in East Sussex are being warned of changes as Network Rail removes the footbridge for refurbishment this weekend.
The footbridge will close on Saturday, 7th February and will remain out of use until mid-April. Its removal will require Hampden Park station to close entirely on Sunday, 8th February, with replacement buses running between Polegate, Eastbourne, and Hastings.
During the refurbishment period, the only recommended route between platforms is through the level crossing at the far end of the station. Southern Rail advises passengers changing trains to use nearby Eastbourne station instead, as transferring platforms at Hampden Park may cause delays.
Southern Rail Head of Stations Tom Easdown said: “The footbridge at Hampden Park is a vital part of our operation, so it’s good news for the community that Network Rail is investing in its refurbishment.
“But our passengers will need to allow plenty of extra time to cross from one side of the station to the other, bearing in mind that if there are trains in the vicinity, the level crossing barriers will be down. And if you’re changing trains then I’d advise against it – travel into Eastbourne instead as you may struggle to make the connection.”
The footbridge refurbishment includes applying a modern protective paint system designed to last at least 15 years, replacing stairs and decking with durable, slip-resistant materials expected to last 25 years, and strengthening the structure to accommodate passenger needs. Improvements also include new handrails, safety mesh, and tactile paving to enhance accessibility for visually impaired passengers.
Tim Leighton, Sussex Route Infrastructure Director for Network Rail, said: “The bridge at Hampden Park needs some TLC to strengthen and refurbish it, keeping it safe for years to come. In a complex operation, we will be lifting it out by crane to transport it by road for specialist refurbishment. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we complete this vital work.”
