Hailsham Town Council has announced the opening of a new dedicated pet cemetery.

Located on Ersham Road, the pet burial ground has been established following thorough research by the council, which revealed a lack of local pet cremation facilities.

Previously, the nearest site was in Ringmer, near Lewes.

Individual plots, measuring 12 inches by 12 inches are available for the ashes of pets.

The cemetery includes landscaping, newly planted shrubs, seating and gravel areas and is expected to hold about 120 plots.

Cllr Mary Laxton, Chair of the Council’s Assets Management Committee, said: “For many people, pets are beloved members of the family, and their loss can be deeply felt.

"This project aims to provide a dignified and local place where residents can lay their pets to rest and remember them in peaceful surroundings.”

“The concept has been carefully considered to ensure the area is respectful, attractively landscaped and well maintained, giving families a special place to visit for years to come.

"By providing this service locally, we are also helping residents avoid the difficulty and cost of travelling further afield.”
