Hailsham hometime crash left my 10-year-old needing therapy
Toni Snook's daughter was hospitalised after she and a friend were hit by a driver on the way home from school
A Hailsham mum says her daughter was left needing therapy after being hit by a driver on the way home from school.
Toki Snook’s 10-year-old was crossing a busy walking route on Amberstone Road when it happened in March.
Both children were hospitalised, with one breaking her arm and the other knocked unconscious.
But despite physically being recovered, Toki revealed that her child is still living with the mental impacts of the collision:
"Every time she gets to a road, she has to hold my hand," she explained.
"She's so fearful, even around cars that aren't moving."
Toki is now urging for a zebra crossing or traffic lights to be installed on the crossing between Linnett Lane and Trefoil Road.
Over 1000 people backed her petition, with a protest also taking place to urge for the changes to be made.
Toki added: "There are more and more houses being built, so there is going to be a lot more foot traffic.
"My concern is someone will get more hurt than what these children did."
An East Sussex County Council spokesperson said:
"An East Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “Road safety improvements, including pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures, are assessed against our local transport plan to ensure that the limited budget we have is focussed on the highest priority schemes.
"The Amberstone pedestrian crossing did not score highly enough to secure funding from the county council’s capital budget.
“Officers are now working on options for alternative external funding for a crossing point, including Community Infrastructure Levy money from developments in Wealden. Those discussions are ongoing.”
