Greek national charged with assisting Iran after arrest in Sussex
The man faces charges in connection with a UK-based journalist's targeting
A Greek citizen, residing in Munich, Germany, has been charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service after being arrested in Sussex.
The allegations are linked to Iran, following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London and Scotland Yard concerning the targeting of a UK-based journalist working for Iran International.
Ioannis Aidinidis, 46, was arrested in the West Sussex area on 16th May by detectives from CTP London, supported by CTP South East officers.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTP London, addressed public concerns, especially those affecting individuals in Persian-language media.
"We know this may cause concern for many people here in the UK, and particularly those working in Persian-language media," Commander Flanagan said.
Police have indicated that Aidinidis’s actions do not appear to pose any wider threat to the public.
Aidinidis is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later to face the charges under the National Security Act.
For individuals worried about their safety, Commander Flanagan advises reaching out to local police forces for further guidance and assistance.
