Rail work could cause disruption in Brighton this weekend.

The Portslade level crossing on Boundary Road is closed throughout today and tomorrow.

Work to replace the track means that diversions will be necessary for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. There are also rail replacement bus services in operation.

Paul Prentice from Network rail explained why the disruption is necessary: "We've got to close the level crossing. And to do that we have to divert motorists along the old Shoreham road so that they can make their way as normal. The road will be closed so we can do the work on the level crossing and we apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused to people's journeys."

"Buses will replace trains all weekend between Brighton and Littlehampton. And the trains that usually run between Victoria and Littlehampton will be diverted to terminate at Brighton only."

"A pedestrian tunnel will be available but because some people may not want to use that, or be able to use that, we have a shuttle service for people who are wheelchair users and those with push chairs otherwise unable to make use of that underpass. That bus will pick up and drop off between Portslade Station car park north of the level crossing and just outside the kebab house by the station."
