Environmental charity CPRE Sussex has voiced its support for a Judicial Review into the government’s decision to approve a second runway at Gatwick Airport.

The legal challenge, launched today (Monday, 3 November) by campaign group CAGNE (Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions), seeks to overturn the Secretary of State for Transport’s approval of Gatwick’s major expansion plans.

In a statement, CPRE Sussex director Paul Steedman criticised the government’s decision, calling it “the latest in a series of assaults on the Sussex countryside.”

“Climate change is the single biggest threat to our countryside,” he said.

“The expansion of Gatwick Airport will significantly increase greenhouse gas pollution, while also bringing more noise, congestion and air pollution to neighbouring communities and protected landscapes.

We cannot let this pass without a fight. We stand ready to support CAGNE in its efforts to fight the appalling decision to approve Gatwick Airport expansion.”

The group argues that the expansion conflicts with national and local environmental commitments, and that increased aviation emissions would undermine efforts to tackle climate change and protect rural areas.

CAGNE announced that it has formally filed for a Judicial Review, a legal process that allows courts to assess whether a government decision was made lawfully.

The proposed second runway — long debated by residents, environmental groups and local authorities — would effectively double Gatwick’s capacity, bringing millions more passengers and flights to the region.

Supporters say the development would boost the economy and create jobs, while critics warn it would come at the cost of higher emissions, increased traffic, and environmental damage.

The transport secretary says it would bring significant economic growth, create jobs and increase tourism.
