Over 750 flights are taking off at Gatwick today in what's expected to be the airport's busiest day of the festive season.

It's as it predicts passenger numbers over the Christmas period will have gone up by 3% compared to last year.

Airport bosses are now encouraging holidaymakers to plan ahead to ensure the experience is as smooth as possible.

Andrew McConnell, Deputy Director of Communications, UK Civil Aviation Authority said:

“London Gatwick will be one of the UK’s busiest airports this festive season, so Pack Safe, Fly Safe.

"Before you head off on your festive holiday, take a moment to check what you’re packing and plan your journey.

"Keep phones, laptops and vapes in your hand luggage, switch off any devices in checked bags and leave gifts unwrapped for security checks.

"A little preparation now means a smoother start to your holiday.”

Passengers are also encouraged to make sure they've booked parking in advance and that they arrive on time - typically two hours before a short haul flight, and three if it's long haul.

The airport added that new security rules mean liquids and electronics can be left in hand luggage when passing through security.
