An Eastbourne man has been banned from driving for three years after he was caught riding a modified e-bike under the influence of alcohol.

35 year old Emile Adams, was riding what he claimed to be a ‘push bike’ on the seafront lawn beside King Edward’s Parade on 29th January where Sussex Police were conducting roadside patrols.

His vehicle was found to have a fixed motor exceeding the 250W output and continued power assistance beyond 15.5mph, disqualifying it from being classed as an electrically assisted pedal cycle.

Adams provided a roadside breath test reading of 92 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml breath, nearly triple the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

He failed to provide an evidential breath sample in custody leading to his arrest. He was charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis, driving without valid insurance, driving a mechanically propelled vehicle not on a road, and driving while disqualified.

Adams pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on 27th February.

He received a 36-month driving ban and a 12-month community order.

Additionally, Adams was ordered to pay £150 in costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
