Dolly Parton's passing announced to shocked Sussex crowd at 9 To 5 musical
Country star's death prompts heartfelt tributes
Audience members at a Sussex theatre were left in shock when news of country music legend Dolly Parton's death was announced on stage before a performance of 9 To 5: The Musical.
The stage show, which features some of the music legend's most popular songs, is currently showing at the Pavilion Theatre in Worthing.
Parton passed away at 80 in a Nashville hospital after a brief battle with cancer, as confirmed by her representatives on Tuesday.
The singer made her mark on Hollywood alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the 1980 film 9 To 5, and later crafted the music and lyrics for the musical adaptation.
Karla Tracey, portraying Parton's character Doralee, shared the sad news with the audience and paid an emotional tribute to Parton, saying, "Tonight, we will perform the piece as she intended with great respect and affection for the woman whose vision brought it to life."
Paul Jepson, chief executive of Landmark Theatres and director of the musical, added, "We would like to take a moment to remember the remarkable Dolly Parton. Our thoughts are with Dolly’s family, friends and all those around the world who loved and admired her."
Parton will be remembered for hits such as 9 To 5, I Will Always Love You, and Jolene.
A musical about Parton’s life, titled Dolly: A True Original Musical, is set to begin previews on Broadway later this year, with its official opening slated for January 2027, parallel to what would have been Parton’s 81st birthday. The musical was Parton's passion project during her final years.
Reflecting on her life's journey, Parton had previously stated, "My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera really and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it."
