Dispersal order issued near Crowborough Training Camp after protest
Police respond to concerns of violence at protest over asylum accommodation
A dispersal order has been issued in the area surrounding Crowborough Training Camp following a protest over its proposed use as asylum accommodation.
On the evening of 9th December, Sussex Police attended reports of a small group blocking the entrance to the camp. A 44-year-old man from Heathfield was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remains in custody. Investigations are ongoing into other reported incidents, including assaults and threats of violence during the protest.
In response to the events, a Section 34 dispersal order was implemented, granting police temporary powers to remove people from the area to prevent further antisocial behaviour or violent disorder. The order covers areas around the A26 Uckfield Road junction with Chillies Lane, Beacon Road junction with Church Road, and all access routes to the training camp. It will remain in effect until 9.15pm on 10th December.
Police statement on the situation
Chief Superintendent Nick Dias acknowledged community concerns and public rights to peaceful protest.
"The vast majority of those who have taken part in recent demonstrations have done so lawfully and respectfully. However, when the actions of a small minority stray into criminality, we will take appropriate action," said Chief Supt Dias.
He also confirmed an increased police presence in the area as part of efforts to maintain order.
"We will continue to work with our partners to support the local community, and encourage anyone with concerns to speak with their neighbourhood officers in the street or at their local police station," he added.
The dispersal order provides officers with powers to prevent gatherings and antisocial behaviour in the defined area. Individuals who fail to comply may face possible arrest.
Residents or businesses in the local area with concerns are encouraged to contact Sussex Police directly.
