Crowborough residents urge new PM to consider them in camp decisions
It's ahead of a fresh judicial review this week
Campaigners in Crowborough are urging the new prime minister to consult them on future decisions surrounding using the town's military camp to house asylum seekers.
Crowborough Shield are launching a fresh judicial review this week to challenge the use of the site to house up to 540 single adult men there.
Last month, it was revealed it could be used until 2030 as the government looks to shut asylum hotels.
As Andy Burnham is sworn in as Prime Minister - Kim Bailey, who runs Crowborough Shield is warning he could end up in the same position as his predecessor without change:
"If he does not actually start addressing the actual root cause of this problem and just continues on with ram raiding these things through in the cover of darkness, I think he will find himself in the same position as Keir Starmer in the not too distant future."
Border security and asylum minister Alex Norris said: ”We promised to close every asylum hotel and hand them back to communities, and that is exactly what we are doing.
“Twenty more hotels have closed, and hotel numbers have more than halved since their peak.
"Instead, we’re moving asylum seekers into ex-military sites that are a far cry from the hotels the last Government left us with.
“This is a system being brought back under control – and we will not stop until the job is done.”
