The A27 in East Sussex is closed in both directions between the A26 (Beddingham) and A22 (Cophall Roundabout, Polegate) due to a collision.

The collision involves two cars, one of which has caught fire.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 6.47am to reports of a car fire near the Drusillas roundabout on the A27.

In a statement, they said: "On arrival crews confirmed there had been a road traffic collision between two cars and one had caught alight.

"They used breathing apparatus to put the fire out and a hose reel jet, as well as cutting gear.

"They also gave first aid assistance to two people.

"Police and ambulance also attended the scene.

"Crews returned to the scene after reports of smoke from the car. Police used a fire extinguisher and no fire was found on arrival of the fire engine.

"The road is likely to be closed for most of the morning."

The scene has now been handed over to Sussex Police.

National Highways contractors are on scene to assist with traffic management and clear up works.

People are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys.
