Council leaders have pushed for urgent clarity from Alex Norris MP, Minister of Border Security and Asylum, over plans to potentially use Crowborough Army Camp for asylum seeker accommodation.

The meeting, held on Tuesday (25 November), included Home Office officials and aimed to resolve fears and confusion within local communities caused by the proposal.

The Minister apologised for the lack of communication, which council leaders say has fuelled misinformation and concern among the public. He promised to quickly provide more information.

During the meeting, the Minister insisted that no formal decision has been made about the site. However, council leaders demanded detailed written communication and in-person engagement to keep residents informed in the coming months.

Councillor James Partridge, Leader of the Council, said, “We remain appalled at the mess the Home Office has made of the situation, but the Minister today accepted the validity of our concerns and agreed to provide more information quickly and to respond to our specific points. Let’s hope action follows these words, and fast.”
