Controversial red route to go ahead on busy Hove shopping street
Traders along Western Road were concerned it would impact deliveries
A controversial no-stopping zone is being installed on a busy Hove shopping street.
Traders along Western Road were concerned a red route would impact how they receive their deliveries.
Brighton and Hove City Council say that the route will reduce anti-social parking, improve safety and access for businesses, improve bus journeys and cut congestion.
It added that it'll be installing 10 new loading bays to reduce the impact on sellers.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “Western Road has a long history of anti-social parking which is both dangerous and causes congestion.
“The Red Route will give us better powers to keep the road clear, safe and flowing in one of the busiest shopping areas of Brighton & Hove and make it a more pleasant area for residents and the local community."
He added that they will be monitoring the road during its first year to help make improvements if needed.
It follows similar schemes across the city, on Lewes Road, London Road and Preston Road cutting injuries by 39% in its first year, the council says.
It added that a public consultation saw 50% feel it would make the area safer.
Plans also include adding more disabled bays.
There's not any confirmation on when it might be put in place.
