The forgotten histories of pioneering local women are being spotlighted in Chichester.

It's part of a new exhibition, called Chichest-HER, opening at the Novium Museum today.

It showcases the achievements of 19 women, between the Tudor Times and present day.

Among the women featured are a psychoanalyst who fled Nazi Germany, a hockey captain who established the Women’s Sport Foundation (now Women in Sport), the coordinator of evacuee arrivals in Selsey during the Second World War, a principal who transformed a teacher-training college and a suffragist who spent time in Holloway Prison.

The've been picked out of more than 100 entries - with the rest taking their own life in an interactive website, where people are invited to add in their own knowledge.

Amanda Rogan, the Museum's manager has been pulling the exhibition together and called it 'fascinating':

"It shows that throughout history, women have been kind of leading the way and doing things that people often look back and think they weren't doing these things.

"It's been really important to kind of say that women have always been doing these amazing things.

Local community groups have worked with local artists to create artistic responses to some of the women’s stories, and these will also be on display.

"Even today, there are people living in Chichester that you might never have heard of, but they're doing these fantastic things for the district, but also nationally," Amanda continued.

"It's just really about sharing that, inspiring future generations of women and girls, to show that actually, no matter where you're from, who you are, what your background is, that you can achieve absolutely amazing things."
