Brighton RNLI rescues paddleboarders drifting offshore during heatwave
The RNLI is issuing a safety reminder issued as conditions change quickly near coast
Brighton RNLI successfully rescued two paddleboarders after they found themselves drifting offshore during a heatwave.
The incident has prompted a reminder for people to prepare adequately before hitting the water.
The volunteers launched their lifeboat after the paddleboarders, including 29-year-old Jake Patten, faced offshore winds while enjoying the calm-looking sea off Brighton.
Despite initial jokes about drifting to France, the pair soon realised the seriousness of their situation as they drifted further from the beach.
Jake Patten, who had limited experience with paddleboarding, managed to stay calm and used his waterproofed mobile phone to call Brighton RNLI for assistance.
Within 20 minutes, the lifeboat crew arrived and safely brought the paddleboarders back to shore.
Patten expressed gratitude, saying, "I always carry my phone with me when I paddleboard and I'm so glad I did. The crew were so friendly. I'd like to say thank you so much to everyone who rescued us."
Phil Jones, volunteer helm at Brighton RNLI, highlighted the importance of preparedness, noting that conditions can swiftly change even on sunny days.
He advised paddleboarders to check weather conditions, avoid offshore winds, wear buoyancy aids, and carry a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch for emergencies.
Jones added, "If you do find yourself in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard as soon as possible."
