Brighton protest demands energy is nationalised as price cap rises

Campaigners in Brighton are taking part in a national day of action over rising energy prices.
A protest is taking place as Unite warns today's price cap increase could add hundreds of extra pounds to our yearly bills.
The union is staging multiple demonstrations across the country as they demand energy comes under public ownership.
Unite regional community coordinator Kelly Tomlinson said: “Already, our members have told us they are struggling to pay their energy bills and without decisive action this situation will only get worse.
“Our protest will highlight this huge increase in energy bills, the need for public ownership of the energy companies and to provide a demonstration of people’s anger at never ending increases in energy prices.”
The Union says, according to its own research, that UK energy companies make £30 billion a year in profits.
Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey said:
“We know families are deeply concerned about rising energy bills because of a war we did not choose, and we are determined to fight their corner to tackle energy affordability.
“The action we took at the Budget, which has taken an average £150 of costs off energy bills, is now factored into bills for the years to come.
“We have also expanded the Warm Home Discount scheme, which benefitted around six million households last winter and will remain in place for the rest of the decade.
“We will continue to monitor the situation ahead of the winter and plan for all contingencies, while doubling down on our mission for clean power to bring down bills for good.”
