Man charged with rape of woman in Brighton
He's due to appear in court today
A man has been charged in connection with a rape and sexual assault in Brighton.
The alleged incident happened on Madeira Drive, close to the Black Rock car park, around 7.30am on Sunday morning, 2nd August.
Police attended the scene and arrested 51-year-old Akiyas Jameldeen from Crawley.
Jameldeen, a British national living in Eden Road, Gossops Green, Crawley, faces two counts of oral rape and one count of sexual assault by penetration.
He is remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 4th August.
Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Adam Hays commented on the progress of the investigation.
“This has been a fast paced investigation with the suspect quickly arrested at the scene.
“I commend the bravery of the victim who came forward to report this and who we continue to support with specialist officers.”
Hays addressed community concerns and noted ongoing efforts to prevent such crimes.
“We are aware of the concern this incident will have caused in the community and will continue to work tirelessly with our partners to create a hostile environment for those who seek to come to the city for the purpose of offending against vulnerable people.”
