Brighton & Hove City Council is calling for collective efforts as it launches a comprehensive seafront maintenance programme.

The initiative aims to keep the iconic stretch from Hove Lagoon to Saltdean looking spectacular and fit for the future.

Councillor Birgit Miller, Cabinet member for Culture, Heritage and Tourism, emphasised the need for collaboration in addressing the diverse challenges posed by maintaining the seafront.

She said, “Our seafront is one of Brighton & Hove’s most loved and recognisable places, but also one of the most challenging to maintain.

"We can’t fix everything at once or do it alone, but this funding will make a real difference to how parts of the seafront look and feel this summer.”

Securing funding for enhancements

The council has allocated £280,000 for maintenance this summer, which will include refurbishment of railings, benches, and shelters, alongside safety checks and cleaning.

However, recognising the scale of the ongoing needs, the council is seeking additional support and exploring further funding streams to expand the projects.

Enhancements will focus on areas needing immediate attention for safety and accessibility.

Brighton & Hove City Council has previously engaged in partnerships to restore features along the seafront efficiently.

Last summer, RJ Dance and the Community Payback Service repaired Hove’s cucumber benches at no expense to the council.

This summer, RJ Dance will continue collaborating with FM Conway and Edburton for work on Marine Parade shelters.

Although the council aims to cover major areas, the phased approach is essential to address prolonged issues systematically.

Railings on Hove Prom are slated for refurbishment later in the year, using a specialist approach to ensure lasting improvements.

Brighton & Hove City Council says it will continue sharing updates on progress, planning improvements to minimise disruptions and maintain access for users and businesses.
