A man has been jailed for a minimum of 16 years after murdering his mother on New Year's Eve in Yateley.

35-year-old Michael Bowen, of Maple Gardens, Yateley, was convicted following a trial at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday 24th July.

Police were called at 9.40am on Wednesday 31st December to a report that 65-year-old Janet Bowen had been found deceased at an address on Maple Gardens.

Her son Michael fled the scene and was later arrested by officers.

Following an investigation, he was charged with murder.

The court heard that before the incident, the pair had an argument after Michael smashed a window at the address.

He later told police he heard voices in his head which told him to cause harm to his mother.

At court, Michael pleaded guilty to manslaughter, criminal damage to property and possession of cannabis.

He was convicted of murder and was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 16 years at Winchester Crown Court on Friday 9th October.

Detective Superintendent Ross Toms, who led the investigation, said: "Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the family of Janet Bowen.

"This was a tragic incident and not only have Janet's family had to endure what happened on New Year's Eve, but they have had to relive it in court.

"I would like to praise her family for their bravery and courage when they were dealing with unimaginable pain and grief. I sincerely hope that they can now try and move forward and rebuild their lives."
