Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest living person, is celebrating her 117th birthday in Surrey.

The occasion follows a year of memorable experiences, which included meeting King Charles and holding his hand.

For her birthday (21 August) Mrs Caterham is surrounded by her family and friends to celebrate her remarkable milestone.

Reflecting on the past year, she shared: "Thank-you for all of the kind birthday wishes. Even at 117, I’ve had many firsts this year, from stroking a llama to holding hands with the King."

Mrs Caterham expressed her joy in the celebrations, saying, "I’ve had a lovely day celebrating with my family and friends, and I look forward to seeing what next year brings."

In September last year, shortly after she turned 116, Mrs Caterham had the chance to meet King Charles, who visited and held her hand.

She reminisced about witnessing his investiture as the Prince of Wales in 1969, when she was struck by the admiration many felt for him, sharing, "All the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you."

Born on 21st August 1909 in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Mrs Caterham is the last surviving subject of King Edward VII.

In 1927, at the age of 18, she travelled to India, working as an au pair until she was 21.

Her journey through life led her to meet her husband, Norman, an army lieutenant colonel, at a dinner party in the UK in 1931.

The couple lived in Salisbury and were stationed in Gibraltar and Hong Kong during Norman's service.

While in Hong Kong, Mrs Caterham established a nursery school and raised two daughters.

Despite personal losses, including the passing of her siblings and daughters, Mrs Caterham continues to be celebrated for her extraordinary life and longevity.
