A Surrey councillor has responded to claims circulating about a supposed 'migrant hotel' in Godalming, urging the public to approach the issue with compassion and verify information before sharing it.

Paul Follows serves as the representative for Godalming South, Milford & Witley and is the leader of West Surrey Council, a shadow authority planning to transition into a new unitary authority in April 2027.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Mr Follows addressed the recent surge in posts and private messages he has received, which he described as 'deeply unpleasant'.

The local leader clarified that the borough has not been informed by the Home Office about any short-term accommodation for asylum seekers in Godalming.

He emphasised that such places are generally used for individuals fleeing persecution and that problems reported in other areas are usually isolated incidents.

Mr Follows has requested those making these claims to provide evidence backing up their assertions.

He reported having only received links to unsupported Facebook posts that people are claiming as ‘evidence.’

The Surrey councillor asked people to think before posting on social media: "Can I please ask people posting on this to remember these things?

"If you post a business name, think of that business and their staff and consider the harm you may be doing them with that sort of post. Your post could impact the business across a wider area too.

"Misinformation has started riots in some parts of the country. People have been injured and property damaged on the basis of nothing more than ‘rumours’.

"Please, please ask for evidence (real evidence) and beware especially of people posting anonymously."
