A Survey taken at the start of this academic year stated that roughly three in four students nationally felt stressed about money.

Financial struggles are also significantly affecting students' mental health. A 2024 survey by Save the Student found 51% of students said the rising cost of living impacted their mental health.

As the cost of living crisis continues, the vice-chancellor of the University of Surrey says that it's one of the biggest challenges that students face.

Stephen Jarvis says however that he is keen to support students.

"Lots of universities, including the University of Surrey are very keen to support cost of living and I think that's one of the biggest challenges students face.

For example we have hardship funds, of up to £4,000 a year in order to support those students who are most in need."

Stephen Jarvis also urged students to take not of all the facilities around them that could potentially be of use.

"We provide support across campus, cooking facilities, tea, coffee, all these things in order to try and make life a little bit easier.

We provide budgetary food options for students, sanitary products, all sorts of things."

It's also worth noting that the University of Surrey offers free appointments with financial advisors through its website.

The website also points out the the Student Union is a good independent source of information and advice on both representation and welfare.
