Traffic disruption on M23 following fatal crash in Surrey
Police say the southbound side will stay closed all morning
The southbound side of the M23 in Surrey between Junction 8 near Merstham and Junction 10 at Crawley are closed following a fatal single vehicle collision.
The closure was initiated around 1:20 am today as Sussex Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service responded to the incident.
National Highways Traffic Officers have been providing traffic management support since their prompt arrival on the scene.
The closure was extended at 2:45 am to begin at Junction 8 while emergency services continued their work on-site.
Sadly, an individual involved in the crash has died, leading to a comprehensive investigation by Sussex Police.
The road closures are expected to remain in place throughout the morning.
There is no estimated time for when the road will be reopened.
Diversion Route
Drivers affected by the closure are advised to follow the diversion marked by the hollow diamond symbol on road signs.
Motorists should exit the M25 at Junction 6 and take the A22 southbound towards Eastbourne.
Travel approximately nine miles on the A22, passing South Godstone and Blindley Heath, to reach the A264 junction at Felbridge.
At the traffic lights with the A264, turn right towards Crawley/Gatwick Airport.
Continue on the A264 for about five miles, passing Copthorne, until reaching Junction 10 of the M23 to proceed with your journey.
Travellers heading to London Gatwick Airport this morning should allow extra time for their trip and consider alternative routes.
Anyone with planned travel on this route should allow additional journey time, plan ahead, re-route if necessary, or possibly delay their journey.
