A woman who bravely reported stalking and threats from her ex-partner has spoken of feeling “empowered and listened to” after her abuser was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

Connor Hotchkiss, 34, was jailed at Guildford Crown Court this week (27 May) after being found guilty of stalking involving fear of violence. He had already served six months on remand, which was not deducted from his sentence. A restraining order has also been issued against him until 2030.

The survivor came forward after Hotchkiss made 65 threatening calls to her in a single day, including repeated threats to kill her and her children. She applied for a Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS) check—also known as Clare’s Law—and discovered he had a history of serious domestic abuse.

After reporting his behaviour to Surrey Police, Hotchkiss was swiftly arrested. The West Surrey Domestic Abuse Team led the investigation.

Sergeant Toby Benson praised the efforts of his team and highlighted the work of investigating officer Donna White, who maintained close and supportive contact with the survivor throughout the case.

“The victim told us she felt fully supported and couldn't fault our response,” said Sgt Benson. “This case shows the value of a joined-up approach—from rapid police response to long-term support from outreach agencies.”

He added that the case also highlights the importance and effectiveness of Clare’s Law in helping protect people from known offenders.
