Surrey Police set to start work on new Leatherhead headquarters
Construction promises improved facilities for officers in Leatherhead
Surrey Police is preparing to begin construction work on its new eastern headquarters in Leatherhead, ending a saga that began in 2023 when safety concerns forced them to leave their Reigate base.
The new site located on Cleeve Road was granted planning permission in November last year. Papers submitted to Mole Valley District Council reveal that preparatory work on the site is scheduled to start on 7th September.
The building, purchased by Surrey Police in 2018 for nearly £20.5 million, was initially intended to house officers sooner. However, plans were delayed as the force considered relocating to Mount Browne in Guildford.
Construction of the headquarters, expected to accommodate 500 officers and staff, is set to begin February 2027.
The building will occupy an unused car park alongside existing plans for 40 affordable homes on the site. These homes, which Surrey Police ideally wants for its staff, will be built separately.
Once completed, Surrey Police will move from their temporary base at the former Surrey Fire & Rescue Service headquarters in Wray Park, Reigate, where they have been since leaving their previous headquarters.
A Surrey Police spokesperson stated the new site would be financially sustainable and provide the facilities necessary for effective crime investigation and community safety.
They added that the Leatherhead location was chosen due to its excellent access to the local area and major road links, which would aid in attracting and retaining staff.
