147,746 police officers were assaulted in the 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales last year (until March 2024).

This was an increase of 0.2% on March 2023 (up 312 from 147,434 officers).

This is the highest number of police officers since comparable records began (in the year ending March 2003), higher than the previous peak of 147,434 FTE police officers in March 2023.

In Surrey, 914 police officers or staff were assaulted, averaging 2 a day.

Trevor Struthers is the Detective Super and Head of Crime for North Surrey,

He told us: Our staff members should not come to work to be assaulted or be threatened or be a victim of hate crime. So we will be working even harder to try and reduce that number going forward this year.

"As an organisation, we realise our officers and our staff are our number one priority.

"And we need to make sure they're fit and well to come to work. "
