A Surrey Charity is urging people to make sure their tenancy paperwork is correct to avoid the risk of homelessness

The Hope Hub in Surrey warn that if your living in a shared tenancy and your partner dies, you become at risk of eviction.

Chief executive of the charity Mags Mercer told us about how it was not a rare thing at all

"We see situations where people have been in happy relationships in a tenancy, in a social tenancy and then their partner, their long-term partner sadly dies and they find their name wasn't on the tenancy, so they themselves become homeless. We have several of those."

Mags added that women are more at risk of this happening too however it was not exclusively women.

Mags described the typical way that these situations play out if you weren't listed on the tenancy when a partner dies

"In a social tenancy environment you will be evicted, you will be given a bit of notice. It varies from provider to provider.

Historically, tenancies would often automatically pass down. That's no longer the case.

So if any children are survivors of a a lone parent, then that would also be something to arrange to get yourself on the tenancy so that your home is assured in the future."

Mags then gave one final urge to ensure people look after themselves and their homes

"I would certainly urge anyone who is on any form of tenancy, whether it's a social tenancy or a private landlord tenancy, to ensure that if you are living and you are contributing to that household that you're on that tenancy agreement"
